R&D Director - PerkinElmer Inc - Sep 2013 - Apr 2015

PerkinElmer is a $2b technology company supplying instrumentation and services to the lifesciences and environmental  monitoring markets.
  • Headhunted by PerkinElmer to lead 35 engineers, scientists & project managers developing analytical instruments (FTIR, UV/Vis spectrometers, IR microscopes, thermal/elemental analysers, air quality sensors, biomass analysers) with business unit turnover of $360m.   
  • Responsible for all aspects of research and new product development from concept to launch with P&L responsibility of $6m, reporting to VP of Global R&D, Boston.
  • Successfully launched  a new low cost air quality monitoring platform with wireless/GSM data transfer, cloud based data analytics, web page and mobile applications.
  • Introduced incentive schemes and IP management processes to stimulate innovation doubling the number of disclosures and patent applications. Established and staffed a new UK technical internship program.
  • Led RoHS compliance program to completion for 50 products.
  • Led a major restructuring exercise transferring all technical product knowledge to the US & China.

Engineering Manager - Emerson Process Management - 2012 - 2013

Emerson is a $24b diversified manufacturing and technology company and a leader in the global market for process controls and instrumentation.

·     Reported to the Technical Director, led a team of 15 physicists & mechanical, electronic, software engineers.

  • Responsible for new product development in the Industrial Process Controls Division involving sensor development, PCB design/test, software development, enclosure design, system validation & certification.
  • Initiated collaborative projects with Emerson engineering teams in China and India cutting time to market by 50%, saving $1.5m in costs and securing a $10m new order.
  • Reinvigorated the engineering team and introduced a raft of best practice processes including simulation, rapid prototyping, peer review, design for test.
  • Initiated a REACH compliance program across range of 150 products.
  • Built strong relationships with global supply chain team to accelerate new product development, improve product reliability and reduce supply chain complexity and cost.

R&D Manager - Biochrom Ltd (Harvard Bioscience Group) - 2009 -  2011

Biochrom is a global leader in the development of analytical equipment used in the life-sciences industry.
  • Reported to the Technical Director, led a team of 17 engineers (mechanical, electrical, software, optical, chemical, physics) with budget responsibility of £1.5m,
  • Grew the team from 6 to 17 over 18 months to support & develop optical, electronic, hardware & software systems for several new OEM’s.
  • Project Lead for new flagship range of UV/Vis Spectrometers employing internal staff, software consultants & contract resources including industrial design and injection mould tool development.
  • Led Design for Manufacture projects reducing unit cost by 20%, part count by 70%, labour content by 50%.
  • Outsourced a key technology platform to China managing the development contract & technical relationship.


Global Photonics R&D Leader - Perkin Elmer Optoelectronics - 2004  -  2008

PerkinElmer Optoelectronics was a $1b multinational supplying medical, scientific, military & industrial markets.
  • Led a team of 9 engineers with a $1m budget reporting to VP Technology in California.
  • Responsible for UK/US flashlamp Centre of Excellence developing innovative photonics technology, new applications and supporting complex manufacturing processes.
  • Built a global technical team based in the UK, US, Germany & Far East with responsibility for recruitment, development and staff appraisal.
  • Identified & implemented best practice across the business reducing failure rates by 80%, doubling product lifetimes and reducing sample development times by 60%.
  • Initiated collaborative work with US and European  suppliers, universities and consultants.
  • Introduced an innovative new skin treatment device used in cosmetic and therapeutic applications.
  • Led a cross-functional team through a critical Six Sigma project saving $6m of OEM revenue at risk and named “Global Team of the Quarter”.
Technical   Manager  - BOC Edwards - 1992 - 2003
BOC Edwards was a $1b business developing vacuum equipment used in semicon, scientific, industrial markets.
  • Progressed from Senior Engineer to Technical Manager responsible for a £0.5m department with 12 staff.
  • Responsible for the technology, production and applications development of thin film vacuum coating systems based on PVD, RF/DC plasma sputtering, Electron Beam coating, Ion Assisted Deposition.
  • Defined a modular architecture for new product platforms and project lead the development of systems and accessories increasing output from £1m to £4m over 3 years.
  • Revamped product development processes to manage increasing demand for bespoke systems and achieved 98% on time delivery record.
Development Engineer - British Telecom Research Labs - 1987 - 1990
  • Designed and produced innovative optical coatings used in optoelectronic and fibre optic devices.
  • Developed novel high precision measurement equipment, supervised technicians.
